What Is the Annapurna High Pass Trek?

The Annapurna High Pass Trek is an extended, multi-pass trekking route that circles the Annapurna massif while incorporating high-altitude pass crossings that go well beyond the standard Annapurna Circuit. It passes through diverse landscapes, subtropical forests, arid Mustang-like terrain, alpine meadows, and glaciated valleys, all within the Annapurna Conservation Area in central Nepal.

Annapurna region map

This is not simply a variation of the Annapurna Circuit. The addition of passes like Mesokanto La and the detour to Tilicho Lake adds significant elevation gain and a sense of true wilderness. The Annapurna region map clearly shows how this route encircles the entire Annapurna massif, making it one of the most geographically complete mountain treks in the world.

WinterDecember – FebruarySnow on passes, extreme coldVery Low
  • October and November are the most popular months due to long, clear days and excellent mountain visibility.
  • March and April offer lush greenery and flowering trails, ideal for photographers and nature lovers.
  • Crossing Mesokanto La in winter is not advisable due to heavy snow and avalanche risk.
  • Monsoon trekking is possible in the Mustang rain shadow zone, but it is still not ideal for pass crossings.

Do I Need a Guide for the Annapurna High Pass Trek?

Yes, hiring a licensed guide is strongly recommended, and in many parts of this route, practically essential. While the standard Annapurna Circuit has well-marked trails and frequent teahouses, sections like the Mesokanto La crossing are remote, poorly marked, and require navigation experience in high-altitude terrain.

Beyond safety, a local guide significantly enhances the cultural dimension of the Annapurna region trek. Guides help you interact with local Gurung and Manangi communities, navigate teahouse bookings during peak season, and make informed decisions if the weather changes suddenly. Trexmount Ventures provides government-licensed, experienced guides who know every section of this route.

How Many Days Are Required for the Annapurna High Pass Trek?

The recommended duration for the Annapurna High Pass Trek is 14 days. This timeframe allows for proper acclimatisation at Manang (Day 7), a full side trip to Tilicho Lake, the Mesokanto La crossing, and a safe descent after Thorong La, without rushing any section of the route.

FAQs About the Annapurna High Pass Trek

1. Is the Annapurna High Pass Trek suitable for beginners?

This trek is not recommended for first-time trekkers. The Annapurna High Pass trek difficulty level is rated strenuous due to three high-pass crossings, long walking days, and altitudes above 5,000 m. Beginners should first complete moderate treks like Annapurna Base Camp or Langtang before attempting this route.

2. What is the maximum altitude on this trek?

The highest point is Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m above sea level. The Mesokanto La Pass reaches 5,099 m, and Tilicho Lake sits at 4,919 m. Trekkers should be fully aware of AMS symptoms before and during the trek.

3. How do I get to the starting point?

The trek begins in Besisahar, Lamjung. From Kathmandu, you can take a tourist bus (7–8 hours) or a private jeep (5–6 hours). From Pokhara, the drive is about 3–4 hours by jeep. Trexmount Ventures arranges all transport as part of our packages.

4. What kind of accommodation is available on the trail?

Teahouses and guesthouses are the standard accommodation type throughout the Annapurna High Pass trek itinerary. Most offer twin-sharing rooms with attached or shared bathrooms. Above 4,000 m, facilities become more basic. Sleeping bags are recommended for high-altitude nights.

5. Is travel insurance mandatory?

While not legally mandatory, travel insurance with high-altitude helicopter evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Helicopter rescues from above 5,000 m can cost USD 3,000–6,000 or more. Most reputable agencies, including Trexmount Ventures, require clients to carry valid insurance.

6. What food options are available on the trail?

Teahouses serve a standard Himalayan trekking menu, dal bhat, noodles, pasta, soups, pancakes, momos, eggs, and oatmeal. Dal bhat is the most recommended meal for energy. Food becomes simpler and more expensive as elevation increases. Budget USD 15–25 per day for meals.

7. When is Mesokanto La Pass open?

Mesokanto La Pass (5,099 m) is generally open from late March to early November. It becomes treacherous or fully blocked by snow from December to February. Always check current conditions with your guide or trekking agency before attempting this crossing.

8. How fit do I need to be for this trek?

You should be able to walk 6–9 hours a day on steep, uneven terrain for multiple consecutive days. Good cardiovascular fitness is essential. Training for 8–12 weeks before the trek, including hill walks, stair climbing, and long-distance walking with a loaded pack, is strongly advisable.

9. Can I get Wi-Fi and a mobile network on the trail?

Wi-Fi is available at most teahouses up to Manang and Jomsom, usually at a small charge. Ncell and NTC SIM cards provide patchy coverage on the lower sections of the trail. Above 4,000 m, connectivity becomes unreliable. Do not depend on internet access for navigation.

10. What gear do I need for the Annapurna High Pass Trek?

Essential gear includes waterproof trekking boots, a down jacket, thermal base layers, rain gear, trekking poles, a headlamp, a sleeping bag rated to -10 degrees Celsius, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a quality daypack. A porter can carry up to 20 kg, but your daypack should stay under 8–10 kg.
