Overview

Ganjala Chuli (5,844 m) (Naya Kaga) is one of Nepal’s most difficult and risky climbing destinations, and it is part of the Langtang-Helambu trip. The Langtang region of Nepal is a popular, well-known, and excellent place for climbing snow peaks and taking in stunning mountain views. The region’s simple access and the presence of multiple snow peaks distributed throughout for acclimatization make it a great location for both novice and experienced climbers. Naya Kanga (5,844m/16) is a beautiful peak rising to the west of the Ganja La pass.

Ascending Ganja La and the peak of Naya Kanga provides amazing views of Nepali and Tibetan mountains such as Langshisa Ri (6,370m/20,894ft), Pemthang Ri (6,836m/22,422ft), Shisapangma (8,046m/27,749ft), Langtang Lirung (7,425m/24,354ft), Pemthang Kapro Ri (6,830m The most common way to Naya Kanga is by the North – East Ridge, which is traversed by a line of ice and snow. For the ascent of Naya Kanga, we use the Langtang trek route to Kyangjin (3,749m/12,297ft). There are various hills to the north of Kangjin that give both spectacular views and acclimatization. There are two peaks northeast of Kyangjin RI (4,700m/15,416ft) that give decent acclimatization climbing: Yala Peak (5,500m/18,040ft) and Tsergo Peak (5,749m/18,857ft). Climbing the North-East Face and North Ridge of Naya Kanga.

We climb steeply along the ridge through a grove of rhododendron and juniper after crossing the Langtang Khola below Kyangjin. At around 4000m, we reach the yak pastures of Ngegang after a gentle climb. We continue climbing hard across moraine on our way to Ganja La. We leave the Ganja La path and ascend a steep moraine to the eastern end of the glacier shelf beneath Naya Kanga’s northeast face. For the ascent, we put up the high camp here. We make our way across the glacier shelf to the bottom of a narrow couloir that leads to the north ridge. We ascend the couloir to the notch and the ridge’s base.

Then we go left to the ice nose, which is the only technical point of the ascent. The ridge expands now, leading to a little col on the east-west summit ridge, with the summit barely 30 meters higher to the right. Climbing near the summit should be done with caution. The ascent usually takes 5-7 hours from the high camp. We can return to Dhunche by the Ganja La-Helambu route or via the route we took.

Difficulties During Naya Kanga Peak Climbing
